This California native plant waits several years before flowering, but when it does, it produces a spectacular flower stalk that can reach several feet tall.
Even more surprising... after flowering and producing seeds, the entire plant dies. It gives everything to that one magnificent bloom.
This spring, I painted two watercolors inspired by this incredible plant: one highlighting the delicate flowers up close, and another showing the beauty of the entire plant.

California Sunflower (Encelia californica)
One of the things I love about this California native plant is that it blooms for months, bringing bright yellow flowers to our landscapes from spring well into summer.
If you take a closer look, you will notice another detail: the silvery-green leaves, covered with tiny hairs that help the plant thrive in the dry California climate.

Charming Centaury (Zeltnera venusta)
This tiny California native flower blooms later than many others, from May through August.
One of its most fascinating characteristics is what happens after it releases its pollen: the stamens twist into tiny corkscrews. Take a closer look the next time you see one; you might be surprised by the details!

Hooker's Evening Primrose (Oenothera elata ssp. hookeri)
One of the things I love most about this California native plant is its color palette: bright yellow flowers, fresh green leaves, and beautiful reddish wand-like stems.
But here's my favorite part...
It is called Evening Primrose because its flowers open in the evening, attracting nighttime pollinators like sphinx moths, and begin to close the following morning.

Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium bellum) is the official flower of the City of San Diego.
On Earth Day, April 22, 2025, the San Diego City Council collectively adopted this California native flower after three rounds of public voting with more than 7,750 votes.
And I had to paint it. Now you can also find this watercolor transformed into MuXu creations, honoring one of San Diego's newest botanical symbols in the shape of this greeting card.
Fun fact: despite its name, Blue-eyed Grass is not a grass at all; it is from the iris family!

Last spring, I walked through my friend Sheila’s garden, and this tiny beauty was there.
This one is Rosa minutifolia, also known as the Small-Leaved Rose. It is the only native rose in San Diego County, with tiny leaves and delicate pink blooms that appear in early spring. I was drawn to its softness and quiet strength.

This one is Cliff Spurge (Euphorbia misera), a hardy, sun-loving shrub that grows along rocky slopes. Its tiny, pale flowers are easy to miss, but once you notice them, you will keep finding more.
I brought this one home after a visit to the California Native Plant Society annual sale. It quickly became part of my reference collection and inspired this piece.

Bushmallow (Malacothamnus fasciculatus) 🌸
Bushmallow is one of those California native plants that rewards anyone who slows down enough to look closely.
Its soft pink flowers attract native bees, butterflies, and many other pollinators throughout the summer, making it an important part of California's ecosystems.
From the watercolor I painted this spring, you can now find Bushmallow as one of my frameable greeting cards.
