Vocabulary
This is a list of words that are related to MuXu, vocabulary that defines what we do and what makes us different, in base on our opinion and experience (Warning: this is not an official dictionary ;)
French Seam
When we sewn seams twice to enclose all raw edges to prevent raveling, giving you a clean finish. You may find this technique in our MuXu tote bags.
Swatch of fabric
It is a sample of the fabric that represents a bigger piece, so the client has an idea in advance about what they are going to get (ex: stores have a “catalog” of fabrics for upholstery sofas, or a sample of the fabric before buying by yard sent to sewist to have a better idea about texture, etc). Swatches out of the trend or the store do not need them anymore, instead of ending up in the landfill, we use them to create sustainable functional accessories.
Dead-stock fabric
It is the remnant fabric in a roll, the leftover that cannot be used for the primary or original purpose (for instance, the remnant size is too small), or is outdated under the Fast Fashion criteria (but good to use). At MuXu, we ask other companies, factories, and other shops for the leftovers to buy and rescue these high-quality pieces from ending up in the landfill, which is nonsense under our values.
Rolled Hem foot
It is a press foot to sew a very narrow and professional hem, with an edge finish of 1/8 inch. It requires some practice to get the technique, but it provides a beautiful end to finish raw edges as you can see in our tablecloths.
Slow Fashion
Slow fashion is a specific way of making fashion, advocating for mindful consumerism, an alternative to mass production. Slow Fashion brings a change of thinking, wearing, and enjoying fashion focusing on the respect and care for the environment, makers, and people behind the production, respecting and valuing the time to create products well done. With Muxu Creations the customers know where, how, and by whom the products are made, reconnecting them with the creative process and the maker, following sustainable practices and minimum waste. (I am going to stop here because it is starting to be a speech instead of a definition…). Check out more information about our values.
Ethical fashion
As part of Slow Fashion, ethical fashion advocates for intentional and mindful consumerism (as we learn in previous Newsletters), which refers to clothing/accessories made in ways that guarantee social welfare and worker rights. That is, what you are choosing us.
Direct-to-garment printer
The one that we have at MuXu to print our watercolors on fabric. It directly prints in fabric using water-based ink and works better in natural fibers like cotton, bamboo, hemp, or linen. Our printer cannot print white color, which we consider in our designs, but it is worth it since we continue to be coherent with our values, even choosing a printer.
Water-Based Ink
This is the kind of ink that we use to print our original watercolors into the upcycled fabric. Water-Based ink is made by suspending a biodegradable pigment into a water base and is used in our Direct-to-Garment printer because of its quality, and eco-friendly. It does not print in white color, but we handle it in the design of the watercolors. More than worth it if that allows us to use this kind of ink that is also a good combination with natural fibers (cotton, linen, hemp..) and does not work in polyesters. Our values determine our choices. Here are some examples of our printed watercolors in fabric.
Ethical consumerism
Ethical consumerism is the powerful act and mindset of consciously choosing fashion that aligns with your values. As a Slow Fashion brand, it means embracing mindful choices that prioritize fair labor, sustainable practices, and respect for the environment. Together (creators, designers, makers, and clients) we can make a difference in the fashion industry.
